Preheat the oven to 400°F. Wash, peel & finely slice the potatoes. A mandolin or box grater works great here!
Mince the garlic.
Bring the milk to a simmer in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic & nutmeg. Season with salt & pepper. Add the potatoes, cover & simmer for 3 min.
Pour the milk-potato mixture into a greased baking dish. Spread the the crème fraîche evenly over top. Bake for 15-20 min at 400°F, or until the milk is absorbed & the potatoes crispy.
