Bruschetta Explained
Bruschetta is what’s known as an antipasto, or appetizer, in traditional Italian cuisine. It’s served cold, which makes it an excellent pairing for summer recipes like salads, kabobs, and pizza.
The base for all forms of bruschetta is grilled bread. This bread is usually cut into long, thin slices to maximize the number of ingredients that can be stacked on each piece. Homemade bread is ideal for bruschetta, but if you can get your hands on French-style country bread, that’s just as good.
A standard bruschetta recipe features mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, garlic, onion, and basil. However, the appetizer can also be topped with meat. We added prosciutto, a traditional Italian form of cured pork, to our recipe to add to its richness and saltiness.
What You Need to Make the Best Bruschetta Ever
If you want to wow party guests or make a spectacular appetizer for date night, bruschetta should be one of your go-tos.
To make great bruschetta, you need:
- A reliable oven or toaster. If using an oven, put it on the broiler setting to maximize its crispiness.
- Mozzarella cheese. This light, creamy cheese melts into a gooey, delicious mess, which is the perfect topping for your bruschetta.
- Fresh tomatoes. Ideally, you’ll use sliced Roma, grape, or cherry tomatoes for your bruschetta. These tomatoes are a bit more sweet and acidic than other varieties, so they’ll get you tons of flavor on each slice of bruschetta!
- Basil. This herb can be chopped up and added to your bruschetta slices as a garnish.
- Prosciutto. You’ll need one slice of prosciutto per piece of bruschetta, so be sure to stock up if you’re making a lot of this delicious antipasto.
Making Bruschetta Step by Step
To make your bruschetta, follow these simple steps.
- Toast your bread on the “broil” setting in the oven. Meanwhile, as the bread toasts, wash and slice your tomatoes.
- When the bread has finished toasting, top each slice with thinly-sliced mozzarella, tomatoes, and prosciutto, in that order.
- Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper, some basil, and a drizzle of olive oil.
- Make sure all of your bruschetta slices look pretty before serving. Presentation is a big deal when it comes to cooking! Check these criteria to make your bruschetta is ready to serve:
- Is there an even amount of tomato slices on each piece of bruschetta?
- Are any ingredients falling off of the bruschetta?
- Is the cheese too gooey or messy? If so, you might need to trim a bit off with a knife.
