Making Beef Fajitas: The Ingredients
Fajitas don't need to be complicated! In fact, our fajita recipe calls for just six simple ingredients:
- Wheat tortillas. You'll need one whole wheat tortilla for each person eating fajitas. We recommend getting the largest flour tortillas you can find. That way, your fajitas can easily be wrapped into burritos if desired.
- Ground beef patties. To make traditional Mexican beef, all you need is ground beef patties and the right spices. Alternatively, you can pick up a flank steak or skirt steak and cut it into strips to make tender carne asada for your fajitas. Whether you're making steak fajitas or sticking with ground beef, you won't be disappointed.
- Tomato sauce. Either use canned tomato sauce or hot salsa to make this dish. For an extra kick, add chili powder or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- Sour cream. This topping is perfect for many Mexican dishes. If you love Mexican cuisine, you'll want to keep a container of sour cream in the fridge at all times.
- Grated cheese. Cheddar tends to pair perfectly with Mexican cooking. Either buy a block of cheese and grate it yourself or get a bag of pre-shredded cheddar to save time.
- Fresh cilantro. As always, cilantro is optional! We know some people love this herb and others hate it. If you're a cilantro fan, use a bit of the herb to garnish your fajitas once they're fully prepared.
Fajita Toppings
In addition to these basic ingredients, you can also top your fajitas with any of the following:
- Grilled onions
- Red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, green bell pepper, or any other veggies of your choosing
- Avocado slices or a few tablespoons of guacamole
- Refried beans
- Mexican rice
- A bit of lime juice or lime wedges
To save yourself even more time, we can handle getting these ingredients to you! We’ll create a grocery list that’s optimized for the number of people in your house, allow you to add anything else you need, and then arrange for grocery delivery or pick-up.
Making Beef Fajitas, Step by Step
Follow these instructions to make perfect beef fajitas.
- Start by putting a large cast-iron skillet on the stove on medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil to the pan before throwing in the ground beef. If you're using another meat like chicken or steak, you can still use the same steps to start the cooking process. You could also grill your protein if you’re looking to mix it up a bit.
- Next, use a wooden spoon or spatula to break the ground beef into small pieces. Add one teaspoon salt, one teaspoon ground cumin, and a bit of blacked pepper for extra flavor.
- As the fajita meat cooks, add the salsa or tomato sauce and use a wooden spoon to mix it in. Stir intermittently for two minutes as the meat cooks. If you want your sauce to be extra spicy, add chili powder.
- Turn off the heat on the skillet and heat the tortillas for 30 seconds in the microwave. Alternatively, heat another pan with a bit of oil and cook each side of the tortilla for 30 seconds.
- Add the beef to the center of the tortilla.
Topping Off Your Fajitas
Once your meat is on top of each tortilla, it’s time to add the rest of your ingredients. Top the meat with a bit of sour cream, shredded cheese, cilantro, and any other ingredients you’ve chosen to add. Give your fajitas a pop of extra flavor by adding in toppings like refried beans, sauteed veggies, and other standards in traditional Mexican cuisine.
You could also switch it up with a fajita bowl by serving the meat and toppings over a bed of grains, like rice.
