Bring a pan of hot salted water to the boil. Add in the split peas, and cook them with a lid on, with twice their volume of water for 45 minutes over low heat.
When the cooking time is up, blend until you have a smooth paste. If necessary, add a bit of water until you get the right consistency. Season to taste by adding pepper, salt, butter or olive oil.
