recipe

  • Step 1
In a small saucepan on low heat, add the sugar & cook until completely melted. Do not stir the sugar! Instead, gently swirl the pan every 15 sec or so. This should take about 3-4 min.
  • Step 2
Remove the pan from the heat once it is completely melted. Add the butter & whisk quickly until fully melted. The butter will bubble up quite a bit!
  • Step 3
Add half of the heavy cream & stir. Add a pinch of salt if desired. Set aside. The caramel sauce will look loose but will thicken up while resting. (If the sauce looks clumpy, add it back to the stove on low heat for 1-2 min while whisking until it comes together smoothly).
  • Step 4
Wash & cut the apples into wedges & remove the core.
  • Step 5
In a shallow bowl, add the remaining heavy cream, egg & cinnamon. Whisk to combine. Dunk the bread slices into the mixture, allowing the bread to soak for 30 sec each side. Place the bread onto a clean plate.
  • Step 6
Heat a drizzle of oil in a frying pan on medium-high heat. Add the apples & cook for 5-6 min until the apples are lightly browned. Remove the apples from the pan.
  • Step 7
Add a dab of butter to the pan on medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the soaked bread & cook for 3-4 min on each side, or until the french toast is cooked through & well browned.
  • Step 8
Remove the french toast from the skillet & serve topped with the apples & caramel sauce. Save any leftover caramel sauce in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks!

♻️ Zero waste tip

Use leftover caramel sauce as a dip for fresh fruit, a topping for ice cream or to make a caramel latte :-)
